![]() Applications of Tweets in Modern Society Without a doubt, the emergence of 'tweets' has created a platform for millions of users to babble about their life stories for another hundreds of millions of users to consume. And we can always count on the creative minds of humankind to push new technologies into new frontiers and followings are some quick compilations of innovative use of tweets. Court of Law Recently, more and more tweet messages are being accepted as admissible evidence in legal proceedings. We have witnessed or heard countless of suits and counter-suits using the tweet contents for the individual cases. In more extreme cases, prosecution has been able to initiate proceedings based on threats of violence express in Twitter posts. Academic Innovation Many innovative implementations in the field of education have helped the learning experience. For example, it has been reported that in certain countries, whose native language is not English, educational institutions have encouraged the use of tweets in order to accelerate the students' appreciations of English words taught in the traditional classrooms. Internationally, tweets have been widely used to enhance the teaching process (in Austria, students send feedback tweets on teachers' performances immediately after each course unit) and promote group participation (colleges in US have been known to involve students in twitting discussions, so that allows for much higher numbers of students to participate in class discussions). Emergency Situations In places where there were power outage or natural disasters strike, tweets have been proven extremely versatile. It can do a remarkable job in getting information out when the national power grid is down and land line not working. For example, during the 2008 Mumbai militant attacks, the world was kept updated on the disastrous event through minute by minute accounts in the hotel via tweets. A more recent example is the earthquake in Haiti where survivors were able to inform their followers of their whereabouts and the degrees of damage in the country. These are all significant not just in terms of news gathering, but they also provide necessary assistance and coordinate to the aid/relief organizations. Political Campaigning More and more politicians are taking advantage of tweets in their campaigning efforts to achieve or regain high offices. Of course, in the recent 2008 US presidential election, Democratic Party nominee, or US president-to-be, Mr. Barack Obama has used tweets to huge success. Public Relations Tool It is common nowadays for organizations to convey its messages by maintaining presences in Twitter. In the US, the police and fire departments are known to sending out tweets for public safety and updates on incidents. Perhaps more alarmingly, undesired elements are getting onboard as well. According to a US Army intelligence report in 2008, it stated that some terrorist groups have started to post blogs in support/promote the extremist perspectives and ideologies. This again illustrates the fact that cutting-edge technologies in the wrong hands can be indeed dangerous. Use in Business For many years, we have seen 'spokespersons' disguised as bloggers who post 'tweets' on giant corporations. The tweets are designed to manufacture a human face to such gigantic setups, but invariably the end goal is to help sell products and services. Thankfully, small businesses who long despaired that this situation has tipped in favor of companies with deep pocket have also benefited from the invention of Twit that cost nothing to use. It is conceivably that all businesses big or small can now compete in more level ground in this space. Article by Brian Brown
